Analysis of Russia's Starch Market in 2024

In 2024, Russia produced 406.8 thousand tons of native starches (corn, wheat and potato), which is 2.9% more than in 2023 (395.5 thousand tons), the Association of Deep Grain Processing Enterprises (Soyuzkrakhmal) reported.The production increased due to the growth of corn starch output: 348.55 thousand tons were produced, which is 4.9% more than a year earlier. The stable increase in corn starch production reflects a steady trend of growth in demand from consumer industries within the country, the association noted.The second place in terms of production volumes was traditionally taken by wheat starch, 46.6 thousand tons of it were produced. "Wheat and corn starches are in the same price category. However, from the point of view of recipe preferences, native corn starch is more popular among consumer companies," explained Oleg Radin, President of Soyuzkrakhmal.

Potato starch production in 2024 amounted to 11.5 thousand tons.The association also reported that the production of modified starches amounted to 123.3 thousand tons, which is 4.6% more than in 2023 (117.8 thousand tons). In Russia, the production of industrial starches used in the oil and gas, pulp and paper, textile, and construction industries still prevails, the association clarified.At the same time, the most intensive growth — by 7.1%, up to 12 thousand tons — was demonstrated by food modified starches. According to the association, the production of starch molasses (glucose syrups) last year grew to 503.05 thousand tons. The production of glucose-fructose syrups (GFS) amounted to 283.947 thousand tons.

The association also reported that several large projects in the field of deep processing of plant materials are currently being implemented in the Russian Federation. Thus, in the Rostov Region, this is a plant for deep processing of corn and production of starches, sugary starch products (OOO Amirost), in the Belgorod Region - a plant for deep processing of corn and production of starch and molasses products (OOO KPK Amidon), in the Tyumen Region - a plant for processing peas and production of pea isolate, starch, fiber (AO Proteinsib).

In addition, biotechnological projects have been announced: in the Tula region - a plant for deep processing of wheat and production of organic acids (OOO Organicheskie Akisloty), in the Voronezh region - a plant for deep processing of corn and production of citric acid (OOO Citron), in the Rostov region - a plant for deep processing of wheat and production of lysine (AO Donbiotech).

"The industry is currently represented by 22 plants, not counting small production facilities. Thanks to the interest of business and the state, we expect significant growth over the next five years. The implementation of several large projects will increase the output of high-value-added products from plant materials, as well as replace the import of important components and ingredients," Radin emphasized.
