Risks to Consider with Letters of Credit in Banking Transactions
Letters of Credit (LC) are widely used in international trade. However, due to the complexities of global commerce, it's crucial to be aware of the inherent risks associated with them.
The level of banking credit support currently varies depending on factors such as country risk, bank reputation, and international sanctions.
I. International banks may not guarantee LCs from the following types of countries:
-
Countries subject to international sanctions;
-
Economically unstable countries or those with foreign exchange shortages;
-
Countries with unstable banking systems;
-
Countries experiencing war or conflict.
II. Even for countries with low overall risk, attention should be paid to the risks associated with banks that have weak payment capabilities.
III. Every transaction is a new transaction.
Even for banks with a previously good reputation, it is necessary to track their real-time international ratings and carefully assess their historical payment records to ensure timely fulfillment of obligations.
